Age-friendly Cities and Communities

Age-friendly Cities and Communities – Brisbane 2016

Nearly 300 municipalities around the world are participating in the Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities of the World Health Organization (WHO).  Across North America and regions of the world there are many cities that form this network as well as Affiliate Programs such as the AARP Network of Age-friendly Cities, which now has more than three dozen members.

It should not be a surprise to anyone involved in age friendly initiatives that there are thousands of individual projects taking place right now.  Just in Canada alone, there are in excess of 1,000 AFC projects.  In September 2013, Quebec City in Canada hosted the 2nd International Conference on Age-Friendly Cities and this was the first time for this event to be held on the North American continent.  The Conference brought together over 700 elected officials, municipal administrators, professionals, practitioners, researchers, decision makers and older people from 46 different countries to share their knowledge and experiences on age-friendly cities and communities.

Building on the success of the Quebec Conference, the IFA and COTA Queensland, in collaboration with WHO, are pleased to announce the inclusion of a specific Conference track on Age-friendly Cities and Communities within the IFA 13th Global Conference on Ageing.  This will be the primary global opportunity in 2015 – 2016 to share policy, program and practices with colleagues from across the globe and to help build a sustainable AFC knowledge mobilisation network.

Take a look around the IFA website to learn more about the Conference, keynote speakers and details of the daily plenary panels.
